September marks the start of the new season and, in case you’ve been considering it, here we bring you several tips if you are starting your strategy to appear in the media for the first time. Why? Because we’ve shared different tips in a general way, but we know from our own experience that after the summer a new phase begins. A moment to implement new strategies. As if a new year were starting.
On many occasions we’ve talked to you about the different aspects to take into account when we think about appearing in the media (such as in this post about “prior recommendations”), and as a rule it has always been from a more technical point of view. Not so much from a personal one. And taking into account that at Real people always come first, here are several tips for you as a person before getting started and taking your personal brand to the media.
By the way, in case you don’t remember, in this article from TopComunicación, a leading outlet in Public Relations (which includes appearing in the media), we explained the importance of this strategy in entrepreneurship.
4 tips (or attitudes) to appear in the media
Getting journalists’ contact details, knowing how to write them an email, linking it to a current hook, etc. These are technical aspects that greatly influence the implementation of this strategy but, as always, there are others that are just as important. Aspects focused on you as a person. Here are our 4 tips, or positive attitudes, to appear in the media:
- Patience. Knowing how to wait is important. Giving things time. Even more so in summer, which is a holiday period. You need to be patient to receive a response and understand that you may have to follow up. Be patient because you might not get anything on the first attempt, but by making adjustments you may succeed on the second or third.
- Persistence. Closely linked to the previous point, it’s important to be able to pursue your goals, even if that means following up with the people you contact to pitch topics. Trying again and again with different approaches until you hit the mark.
- Analytical mindset. To hit the mark, thinking is essential. Stop and think. Analyze. Review what you proposed, how you proposed it, and when you proposed it (the day or even the time). Being able to look at these details and make adjustments can make all the difference.
- Creativity. Yes, but without unnecessary frills. Make a difference by being creative in how you approach topics, in finding kind or effective ways to present your ideas and yourself, in how you engage a journalist, or, for example, by going beyond an email and offering them a free trial of your service, inviting them for a coffee, or sending a physical sample, among other options.

Extra tip: if you need it, ask for help
As good entrepreneurs, we try to handle everything. And sometimes it’s possible if you delegate other parts of your business. For example, we delegate accounting and website maintenance so that, today, we can continue managing our social media and the blog, which we enjoy. Of course, to do that we’ve also completed some training.
Appearing in the media works the same way. You can do it independently, of course, just as you can delegate it. The key, whatever your situation, is that if you see you need help because you lack knowledge or time and prefer another professional to handle it, ask for help.
There is always a format that can adapt to your pace or your way of working. For now, we have two. On the one hand, consulting sessions based on our 5:3 method to appear in the media if you want to manage it yourself, and on the other, our entrepreneur plans (also based on our method) if you choose to delegate it.
Which attitudes caught your attention the most? Do you think you meet all four, or do you feel you’re missing one? Would you add any other relevant attitudes? Tell us in the comments!
